Fall always puts me in a literary mood, perhaps because the South Dakota Festival of Books is held in late September or early October. I relish the opportunity to listen to writers discuss their books and always leave inspired to work on new projects.

There’s nothing easy about fooling a cow into thinking an orphan calf is hers, and sometimes the rancher will skin the dead calf and lay its hide over the orphan calf so the cow will “scent” the calf and think it’s hers.
Read moreThe Lady Raiders traveled to Chamberlain to take on the Cubs last Friday night in girls basketball action. With only two regular season games left on the schedule this was the last road game. Wagner would start out quick jumping out to an early 12-2 lead. The Raiders would use some defensive pressure and some great transition early to jump out to a 22-10 lead after the first quarter. The Cubs would get some momentum in the second quarter but it wouldn’t be enough fire power as the Raiders would out score them 22-17 and hold a 43-27 advantage. Wagner would also win the final two quarters out scoring the Cubs 36-26 and winning the game 79-53. Wagner would shoot 49% from the field 33-68 while the cubs would post the best shooting percentage against the Raiders all season with 42% going 13-31. The Cubs would live at the charity stripe converting 26-30 while the Raiders would just for 5-10. Wagner won the battle of the boards 29-21 by coming away with 17 offensive boards. 22 costly turnover would haunt the cubs throughout the game while Wagner would only commit 9. Shalayne Nagel would lead Wagner with 25 points, 8 boards, 7 assists and 4 steals. Ashlyn Koupal would add 20 points, 7 boards, and 2 steals. Eve Zephier would net 14 points, 3 boards, 7 assists, and 2 steals. Emma Yost would be the 4th Raider in double figures with 10 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals. Macy Koupal would chip in 5, dish out a game high 8 assists, a game high 5 steals, and grab 2 boards. Lydia Yost would round out the scoring for Wagner with 5 points, and grab 3 boards. “Offensively we got things rolling. We did a great job whether they played man or zone. We did an excellent job in transition. Defensively we got after them and pressured them into a bunch of mistakes. We did have trouble stopping their post, but we held the rest of their team to 17 points combined.”

Wagner would jump out to an early 5-0 lead and scorch the nets the first half putting up 42 points and leading 42- 23 at the end of the first half. The score would remain the same the second half as both teams would score 27 points and the Raiders would be victorious 69-50. Ashlyn Koupal would flirt with a triple double with 18 points, 8 assists, and 8 boards. Eve Zephier would add another 15 points, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Shalayne Nagel and Emma Yost would each add 12 points. Emma would post another double-double with 13 boards and 3 assists. Shalayne would grab 6 boards, and dish out 4 assists. Macy Koupal would chip in 8 points, grab 3 boards and dish out 2 assists. Lydia Yost would add 2 points, grab 4 boards and dish out 3 assists. Sydney Cournoyer would finish also with 2 points. The Raiders would convert on 29-58 from the floor for 51%, while the Rustlers would go 18-56 for 32%. Wagner would own the glass with a 36-24 advantage. Wagner would commit 7 turnovers to 9 from Ethan. “Another great team effort. We need to bear down on defense in the second halves of games to limit a bit of our opponents scoring. Offensively we had balanced scoring, great ball movement and the ladies, did a great job of attacking the offensive boards. It’s been a while since we have been in the double figures and we got 12 tonight with a lot of put backs for points. These girls are workers and do what needs to get done!”
Read moreThe Red Raiders defeated Avon Saturday in Wagner by a score of 75-34. Wagner had a 1 point lead after the first period 15-14. The Red Raiders held Avon to just 3 points in the second quarter and led 40-17 at the half. The Red Raiders expanded their lead throughout the second half and got their biggest margin of victory of the season. Matt Link led the balanced scoring attack for the Red Raiders with 18 points, Dustin Honomichl had 17, Chris Nelson 14 and Toby Zephier 10. Other scorers for Wagner were, Camden Roth 5, Caleb Zephier 3, Braxton Knudsen, Carter Cournoyer, Joey Cournoyer and Preston McFayden with 2 each. Chris Nelson had 6 steals and 4 rebounds for Wagner.
Read moreThe Red Raider JV team defeated Avon in a shortened contest on Saturday. The two teams played 3 quarters as Avon was short a few players. The Red Raiders led 15-7 after the first period and 35-20 after the second. Wagner played good defense in the final period and won the game by a score of 48-28. Preston McFayden, Carter Cournoyer and Joey Cournoyer each scored 10 points for Wagner. Ted Slaba added 8 points, Parker Petry 6, Treyson Zephier and Glenn Cournoyer each scored 2.
