The Knights of Columbus and other farming friends rallied together Thursday to combine Brad and Francis Lhotak's 300 acres of soybeans. Pioneer Seeds sponsored the meals for the amazing crew who put their own harvest on hold to help their neighbors and friends.
Read moreCarol Ann Schlim was born on June 1, 1948 to Larry and Dorothy (Tietge) Beemer in Lake Andes. She attended school in Lake Andes, graduating from high school in 1966. She attended Cottey College in Nevada, MO, and then South Dakota State University in Brookings, receiving her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1971. At this time, she moved to Tucson, AZ where she accepted her first position as a Registered Nurse (RN). In 1972, Carol moved to Denver, CO and then to Colorado Springs, CO where she started a family (Loren Jones) and continued her career as a RN. In 1981 following Loren’s death, Carol and Nicolas moved to Mitchell where Carol worked as a clinic nurse. In 1983, Carol and Paul Schlim were reunited and the high-school sweethearts were joined united in marriage on October 13, 1983 in Mitchell. Together they made their home in Lake Andes while focusing on raising their five children. They remember those years as some of the best years of their lives. In 1989, the family moved to Jasper, MN and then later, in 1994, the family moved to Pipestone, MN. While living in Pipestone, Carol worked as a paraprofessional at Brown Elementary, and as a RN with several places including: the Good Samaritan Village, Good Samaritan Home Health Care, as a Nurse Educator with Minnesota West Technical and Community College, and as a Parish Nurse with both the First Lutheran and the United Methodist Churches in Pipestone. Carol helped develop, create and lead the parish nursing program. In 2007, Carol retired and in 2018 the couple moved to Brookings. She courageously lived with breast cancer for 12 years. Carol passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at her home in Brookings at the age of 72 years, three months, and 25 days.

Read morePrivate funeral service with military honors for Thomas (Tucker) Frank Hrdlicka, 72, of Armour will be held on Tuesday, October 13 at Wagner Lake. Visitation with family is October 12 at Peters Funeral Home in Wagner with prayer service following. There will be a dedicated memorial place for him at the original Hrdlicka homestead. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner is in charge of arrangements.

This fall 403 South Dakota FFA members from 67 chapters, will receive their own FFA jackets through the SD FFA Foundation Blue Jackets Bright Futures FFA Jacket Program - carrying forward that long-standing tradition of pride, dignity and honor. Jackets were sponsored by various individuals through the SD FFA Foundation program, welcoming new members into the fabric of FFA. FFA members filled out the Blue Jackets Bright Futures FFA Jacket Program application, answering short essay questions about their FFA experience and goals, competing to earn their own FFA jacket instead of purchasing one. 2020 recipients & their sponsors are:

Rotarian Jeff Doom substituted for President Bryan Slaba and demonstrated that he had not forgotten how to ring the bell. Nice job Jeff. Tom Larson, my East Men’s Hall roommate, and I were returning on foot to the SDSC campus in Brookings after a few games of snooker and ten-cent beers at B&G billiards, otherwise known as Gussie’s. I was on the football team, and we either had an open date or I didn’t make the traveling squad for a game that required air travel. Little did I know that something so insignificant could bring about a monumental event in the course of my life.
