The 605 Unity Jam will be held on Sunday, June 13 at the Wagner Lake park area. Much of the event planning part of the project is coming to an end as we come closer to the event date. A wide variety of activities are being planned for this special event and will include: a Bean Bag Tournament, a fishing contest for children, inflatables and carnival games, arts and crafts, food venders, a variety of culture related programing and lots of music throughout the day. Since it is unknown how many people will attend this event, no cars or parking will be permitted in the park due to safety concerns. Prior to this date several individuals and businesses were approached and asked if they would be interested or willing to become a financial partner to help make this even possible for the community. If you had thought about supporting this special event for the community you are greatly encouraged to contact Dana Sanderson as soon as possible so you can be added to the roster of those who are helping. The Unity Jam still has openings for food venders and arts and craft venders as well. Also, if you are interested or willing to share some of your cultural heritage in small group settings you are also encouraged to contact Dana Sanderson (605-491-0804) as well to become part of the programing. Helping others to better understand your cultural background can really help in bringing us better understanding and appreciation of each other.

Read moreStudents from the Marty Indian School, Andes Central and Wagner Community School were given the opportunity to design a community art project for the “Imagine Design Contest” relating to the 605 Unity Jam that will be held in June. The students were asked to use their creativity, imagination and talent to create an original idea that would be drawn on a bison image. The designs submitted would then be judged by a group of community individuals who would select the best ideas to have professional artists then transform the students design on to a fiberglass sculpture of a a bison that would be permanently placed on the hill side on the north side of Wagner Lake. A plaque would also be placed with the sculptures stating the importance of unity and also list the name of the Wagner Chamber of Commerce and the Yankton Sioux Tribe, as they made this community art project possible. Also on the plaques will be the names of the winning student designers and the professional artists who then painted the designs. The students were excited to be involved as the sculpture represents one of the most iconic figures in the world and helps draw attention to our state from all parts of the world.
