Juneteeth, celebrated on June 19th is now a National Holiday in the United States. Would you like to learn more about this holiday? The library is a great place to begin. The library has a collection of biographies of people who played a critical role in the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil Was, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation. The local library also has access to materials from the South Dakota State Library, or books can be downloaded to your electronic device for reading from Overdrive.
