Avon’s boys’ basketball team kicked off their season on December 11 in Avon against the Parkston Trojans. Parkston outscored the Pirates 60 to 31. As the team works to find their rhythm, they then traveled to Corsica to play the Corsica-Stickney Jaguars on December 14. Scoring struggles plagued the Pirates resulting in a loss of 22 to 58. Senior Lincoln Thury said, “As a team, we need to improve on shooting with confidence and rebounding the ball after every shot.”

Christmas is upon us, and the sounds of Christmas could be heard at Avon School on December 9 at the Winter Concert. Band Director Mataya Larsgaard tried to pick challenging songs for the students but also pick songs that they would like. She had songs with a variety of different key changes, tempo changes and time signature changes. She put the jr. high and high school together for one song so they could have the opportunity to collaborate and listen to each other. This is a great motivation for the jr. high instrumental students.

Studying living cells is essential in the study of biology. Creating a replication or interpretation of the cell has become an essential project. This project consists of a 3D model, a t-shirt or a poster. The students get to choose which cell project they want to do.

Avon’s Lady Pirate basketball team had their season opener against the Parkston Lady Trojans on December 6. The Lady Pirates faced defeat at 45-59 after battling the whole game and losing senior Makayla Kopp to knee injury, a torn ACL.

As the new year approaches, Avon School says goodbye to our business manager of over five years, Sara Hento. Hento’s highlight of her time in Avon was getting to know the community and staff closer than when she had previously worked in Yankton. She will miss her co-workers the most because they are an awesome group of people and very close to her heart.

On Thursday, December 2, preschool through fifth grade performed “Karaoke Christmas” at their Christmas Operetta. Mrs. Raja Brandt directed the preschoolers, Miss Mataya Larsgaard directed the fifth grade band, and Mrs. Autumn Schultz directed and choreographed kindergarten through fifth grade.
