WAGNER HOST IRENE-WAKONDA IN HOME OPENER

The Raiders hosted the Irene-Wakonda Eagles last Tuesday night in girls’ basketball action. The Eagles have won 4 straight against the Raiders and were coming in to try to steal another. The first half would be a defensive battle. The Raiders would hold an 8-point advantage at one point, only to see it slip away and end the half with a 22-20 lead. Wagner would storm out of the locker room in the second half and take a 41-29 lead. They would increase it to as much as 14 in the 4th. The Eagles would mount one last attack, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Raiders would finish with the win 56-48. Wagner would use a very balanced scoring attack. Emma Yost would record another double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Eve Zephier would add 9 points. Shalayne Nagel also netted 9 points, grabbed 5 boards, and dished out 4 assists. Macy Koupal would also put in 9 points, grab 7 boards, and dish out 4 assists. Lydia Yost would add 8 points off the bench. Ashlyn Koupal would chip in 5 points, grab 4 boards, and dish out 3 assists. Sydney Cournoyer would also add 2 points off the bench. Wagner would shoot 21-49 for 43% while the Eagles would shoot 18-42 for 43%. Wagner would own the glass again with a 29-17 advantage. Wagner would commit 12 turnovers compared to 8 from Irene-Wakonda. The Raiders would hit 7-12 from the line while the Eagles would go 9-13. “Defensively Shalayne did a great job again on their go to scorer. Our helpers on defense got to the paint to help when needed. We all rebounded well again. Macy got the transition going as we got a few more looks this game than the previous. Offensively we struggled getting the ball to the high post. We didn’t penetrate gaps to create open looks for our teammates. We are distributing the basketball as we ended the game with 17 assists but creating for others is going to push that number up even more. The great thing is that the season is young and there is plenty of time to make improvements. We fought some adversity this game with it being close again and we found a way to win! Great job girls!”
