The Lady Raiders traveled to Gregory last Tuesday night in girls’ basketball action to complete their 5 game road trip. The Raiders would start out to a 5-0 lead and hold that margin after the first with a 14-9 lead. Gregory would play tough in the second quarter taking a 19-18 lead late in the second, but Wagner would finish the quarter on a 8-2 run to take a 26-21 lead into half. Wanger’s defense would stifle the Gorillas in the second half as the Raiders would out score them 27-11 and finish the game with a 53-32 victory. Wagner was led by a well-balanced scoring attack. Macy Koupal led all scorers with 11 points, while grabbing 8 boards, dishing out a team high 4 assists, and coming away with 2 steals. Shalayne Nagel would follow that up with 9 points, a team high 11 boards, 2 assists, and a team high 3 steals. Eve Zephier would add 9 points and grab 3 boards. Ashlyn Koupal would also net 9 points, grab 4 boards, and dish out 2 assists. Emma Yost would finish with 8 points and 4 boards. Lydia Yost would add 5 points and 7 boards off the bench. Jessica Kocer would round out the scoring with 2 points. Wagner would shoot 19-55 for 35% from the floor compared to jus 13-52 for 25% for the Gorillas. Wagner would own the glass with a 40-29 advantage. The Raiders would hit 8-9 from the line while Gregory would go 5-12. “Defensively we switched things up again by starting man and were giving easy looks. In zone we were very active and contested most of their shots. Offensively we started a bit slow and once we got some ball movement we created some open looks from the perimeter and knocked down those shots. We still need to do a better job of attacking.”

The Lady Raiders hosted their region rival 8-1 Parkston Trojans last Thursday in girls’ basketball action. It’s been nearly a month since the Raiders have played a game at home and the confines of the Wagner gymnasium treated them well as the Raiders scorched the nets shooting 48% from the field and holding Parkston to just 26%. Wagner would jump out to any early 7-0 lead and would extend their lead to 13 while holding an 18-5 lead going into the second. Wagner would increase their lead to 16 going into the half with a 33-17 lead. The third quarter would find both teams staying even as the Raiders would hold a 45-29 advantage. In the past Wagner has been prone to have a lull quarter but not tonight. They would put up 24 in the final frame to stroll onto a 69-41 victory. Wagner would have 4 players in double figures for the night in a well balanced scoring attack! Shalayne Nagel would lead all scorers with 15 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Macy and Ashlyn Koupal would both score 14 points. Macy would add 6 boards, and dish out 5 assists. Ashlyn would add 4 boards, 3 blocks, and dish out 2 assists. Emma Yost would also score in double figures with 11 points, 9 boards, and 3 assists. Lydia Yost would chip in 6 points off the bench while grabbing 3 boards. Eve Zephier would finish with 5 points, 3 boards, and dish out 5 assists and McKenzie Fuchs would round out the scoring with 4 points. Wagner would control the glass out rebounding the Trojans 36-29. Wagner would commit 7 turnovers to Parkston’s 8. “Offensively this has been the best we have played for an entire game. Very unselfish play with excellent ball movement. Our guards did a great job of pushing the ball down the court and we made great decisions on shots and attacking the basket. Defensively this the most points we have allowed all year. We didn’t do as good of a job as in the past of defending the ball screens. That led to some easy penetrations by their guards that led to fouls. We don’t bail them out by fouling we could easily take off some points on their score. Overall though, an emotional game, with a very excellent showing by our team.” The JV team was defeated 32-43. Ashlyn Koupal led all scorers with 15 points. Aniyah and Avari Bruguier added 5 and 4 points. Braxton Nedved and Lydia Yost each added 3 points.
Read moreWagner gave up 25 points in the first quarter in Tyndall Friday night and fell behind 25-13. The Red Raiders defense improved and gave up 34 the rest of the game but lost 59-54. Wagner had chances to tie the game late in the fourth quarter but struggled to score. Toby Zephier led the way with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Dustin Honomichl scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Ted Slaba scored 7 points, Daelyn Red Buffalo scored 5 points, Niko Drapeau and Carter Cournoyer each scored 4, Xander Khadka added 3 and Camden Roth 2. The Red Raiders were 2 of 3 from the foul line.

Wagner defeated Bon Homme’s JV by a score of 56-35. The Red Raiders outscored the Cavaliers by 13 in the second half. Carter Cournoyer led the team with 14 points, Preston McFayden added 12, Ted Slaba scored 10, Joey Cournoyer had 8, Braxton Knudsen 4 and Deshawn Sully 2. The JV boys are now 3-1.
Read moreCorsica Stickney scored 23 points in the first quarter and built a 23-8 lead. The Jaguars extended their lead to 41-18 at half time. Wagner played a much better second half outscoring the Jaguars by 5 in the third quarter making the score 38-56 heading into the fourth quarter, Corsica Stickney held their lead and won the game 76-51. Dustin Honomichl scored a team high 26 points and had 7 rebounds. Toby Zephier added 10 points and 9 rebounds. Chris Nelson scored 9 points, Matt Link 3, Daelyn Red Buffalo 2 Calvin Wright 2 and Ted Slaba 2. Wagner was 8 of 11 from the free throw line and lost the rebounding battle 26-46.

Wagner fought back to force over time but fell 4 points short losing 32-28. Preston McFayden scored 10 points for Wagner, Joey Cournoyer added 6, Carter Cournoyer and Ted Slaba each scored 5 and Glenn Cournoyer added 2.
