The Annual Open Class Show will be held during the Bon Homme County 4-H Achievement Days. If you enjoy making projects or have a hobby and would like toshowoffyourwork,hereis your chance! You can enter a variety of items to show. Anything from painting, quilting, baking, canning, collections, photography, gardening and so much more! Our Achievement Days schedule has changed slightly this year, and all exhibits will be judged on Thursday evening, August 1st. All exhibits should be entered Thursday, August 1st, by 5:00 p.m. at the 4-H Centerandmustgobyguidelines in the South Dakota State Fair Book.

Volunteer firefighter, Brian Janssen, has been with the Avon Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years. Brian comes from a firefighting family. His dad, Don, and his brothers, Doug and Keith were all firefighters in Avon. Growing up, Brian watched his dad, Don, go to fires and help save and protect property and lives in the Avon community. It made Brian want to follow in his father’s footsteps and do the same thing for the Avon community.

My first experience with cardiopulmonary resuscitation was during the summer of 1969. I was an orderly in a Minneapolis intensive care unit (ICU) when my patient stoppedbreathing.Icalledforhelpandprovidedmouth-tomouth breathing until the team arrived. Later the doctor told me I saved the patient’s life, further convincing me that medicine was my life’s purpose.

Wally Voigt is being honored as this month’s AvonVeteranoftheMonth.VoigtisaVeteranofthe Vietnam War and was drafted into the Army at the age of 19. At the time of his draft, he was working. He entered the service October 1st of 1969 and one year, 11 months, and 27 days later in September of 1971 his tour of duty ended.
