The Red Raider varsity team took on Scotland Thursday night in Wagner. The Highlanders shot the ball well in the first period but Wagner would answer and take a 17-16 lead after the first period. The Red Raiders played better defense in the second and third quarters holding Scotland to 12 points in the second and 8 points in the third, The Red Raiders offense did not slow down, Wagner scored 23 points in both the second and third quarters taking a 63-36 lead into the fourth quarter. Wagner went on to win the game 78-39. Dustin Honomichl led the team in scoring with 18 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. Toby Zephier scored 13 points along with having 10 assists and 5 steals. Chris Nelson scored 11 points, Greg St. Pierre also scored 11 and had 5 steals. Jaden Peters scored 10 points and had 7 rebounds, Nolan Carda had 10 points an grabbed 5 rebounds. Simon Freier score 3 points, and Jayden AUngie added 2 points. Wagner shot 60% from the field and 83% from the free throw line. The Red Raiders forced 25 turnovers which they converted into 37 points.
Read moreWagner’s 7th grade boys traveled to Parkston on Saturday, February 1, to play in their junior high tournament and came away with two wins in three games. In their first game they were able to avenge an earlier loss to Platte-Geddes by defeating them 31-25. It was a slow start as the halftime score was 10-4. Some solid free throw shooting proved to be the difference as Wagner shot 8 for 10 from the line while Platte-Geddes was only 5 of 14. Wagner was led by Aziah Meyer’s 10 points. Preston McFayden followed that up with nine while Parker Petry added eight. Brady Cournoyer also contributed four second half points.

Read moreOn Thursday, February 6, Wagner’s junior high boys played host to the Gorillas from Gregory. The 7th graders lost by a score of 45-22. Wagner was led in scoring by Deshawn Sully’s ten points. He was followed by Aziah Meyer who had seven. Jackson Rolston and Preston McFayden had four and three points respectively.
Read moreGrapplers take down Tanagers The wrestlers from Wagner took on Class A Vermillion in a dual on Tuesday, February 4th. The Raiders came out on top big, by a score of 51-18. Karstyn Lhotak filled in at 106 and defeated Hayden Schroeder (V) earning a 5-3 decision. Jagger Tyler stepped on the mat next, dispatching his opponent, Connor Peterson, by a 8-0 major decision. Lance Soukup, at 120, pinned Nick Roob (V) in 1:52, followed by another Raider pin by Riley Roberts over Rollie French (V) in 3:09. Owen Bekanich, a first-fought match to Felix Perez (V). It was great experience for Owen though, and a match that he learned from. Braydn Lhotak went out at 138 and secured the pin over Caleb Emerson (V) in 2:49. At 145, Owen Eitemiller put on a gutsy performance, pinning Hunter Lavin (V) in 5:42. Owen was sick as a dog, but didn’t let us know his true feelings until after the dual. Lucas Anglin (V) pinned Bain Kuhlman at 152 in 1:04 and then at 160 Preston Nedved earned the 8-0 major decision Tyson Hage (V). Tim Bouza was pinned by Jack Kratz (V) in 1:03 at 170, but Tim continues to work hard and improve. As an 8th grader at these weights, he is overpowered often, continues to never give up. Nolan Dvorak, bumping up to 182, got the pin over John LaCognata (V) in 2:47, while Tony Bruguier earned the first period pin over Brock Voss (V) in 1:57. KJ St. Pierre delivered the final win of the night for the Raiders, a 9-1 major decision over Cobe Culver (V) to bring the final score to 51 Wagner, 18 Vermillion, as both teams forfeited at heavyweight. As a whole, the team looked very good on top, and were firing up off the whistle on bottom. We went out and controlled the matches in most cases, which is what coaches ask them to do. There are only a few short weeks left of the season, and the regular season will conclude on Tuesday, February 11, when the Raiders take on Parkston and Canton in a triangular in Parkston.
Read moreOn Saturday, February 8th, the Red Raider wrestlers took part in the annual Yankton Buck Invitational. This is a nineteenteam tournament, featuring only three class B schools, the remaining sixteen schools being class A schools from SD. On this day, the Raiders, even though short-handed due to illness, were able to secure fifth place, while only having nine participants. The Raiders were the highest of the class B teams at the tournament. Top five team scores were: 1st Watertown (coached by former Raider head coach Chaz Welch) 224, 2nd Rapid City Stevens 182.5, 3rd Pierre TF Riggs 154.5, 4th Mitchell 129.5, and 5th Wagner 124. I have no doubt that with the three guys that were out due to sickness, we would have bumped into that 4th place position.

The Marty Braves took the Dakota Oyate Challenge by surprise knocking off highly rated Tiospa Zina Wambdi, Omaha Nation Chiefs and Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks. Marty Braves, Alex Cournoyer and Audree Iron Elk, win the 3-point competition. Xavier Hare was the MVP and Mr. Defense. Torrey Bohannon got All Tourney and Mr. Hustle. Alex Cournoyer was also selected to the All Tourney Team.
