The Siouxland Women’s Magazine is a monthly publication that features local human-interest articles and storiesfeaturingbeauty,family and fashion. The September 2023issuefeaturesaninterview with local Avon artist, Johnny Swatek. He is the September issue’s featured artist. The interview includes twelve questions rangingfromcreativeinfluences andpaintinghabitstofamous people he would like to have dinner with and things on his bucket list. The article also displays several beautiful paintings created by Johnny. One of the most interesting questions asked of Johnny was how he would want to be remembered. Swatek’s response was, “More than anything else, I’d like to be remembered as the painter who never stopped learning, who constantly strived to be better and who always gave my clients the memories they were hoping for”.

The theme for homecoming this year is “Superheroes.” The festivities for the exciting week commence on Monday, September 11, 2023 at 7:30 P.M. in the Avongymwiththecrowningofhomecomingkingandqueen. The “Burning of the ‘A’” will follow at the baseball field. On the morning of Friday Sept. 15nat 8:30 a.m., grades 7-12 will perform the skits they have been working on throughout the week. After the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places are announced, floatbuildingwillbegin.Thehomecomingparadewillbegin at 1:30 P.M. on Main Street. The Avon Pirates will compete against the Hitchcock Tulare Patriots on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 7:00 P.M. to conclude homecoming week. In addition to the football game, the Lady Pirates will take on the Wagner Red Raiders Tuesday, September 12, 2023 and the ScotlandHighlandersThursday,September14,2023,bothin Avon. The cross country team will compete September 11, 2023, in Wagner at 2:30 P.M. and they will run in Freeman on September 13, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. Throughout the week, students and staff can show their spirit by participating in the homecoming week dress-up days. The week will start with “Minion Monday,” followed by “Class Colors” on Tuesday, then “Dressing up like a Teacher” on Wednesday, “Superhero Day” on Thursday, “Red/Gold” day on Friday!

Read moreThese last few weeks, the Lady Pirates hosted the Parkston Trojans and the AC/DC Thunder to start off their season. They also traveled to Tripp to play the Nighthawks, and Alcester to take on the Cubs. On Tuesday, August 29th the Lady Pirates took on the Trojans, but fell short by just a few points in the fifth set. The Lady Pirates took the victory against AC/DC, beating them in 3 sets. They beat Tripp in four sets. Lastly, the Lady Pirates fought hard to beat the Cubs, but fell short by two points. The Lady Pirates will host Scotland and Wagner next week for homecoming.
