Bruner Honored as Lake Andes

Ed Bruner is a Veteran of World War II. He was drafted into the service in 1944 at the tail end of World War II. Bruner served as part of the United States Air Force. His length of service was 18 months and two days. Even at 96 years of age, that was one detail that Ed did not forget. Bruner spent his training at the Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. This is also where he did his advanced individual training (AIT) starting out on kitchen police duty and eventually moving to a military police position as soon as it opened. Ed can remember that for most of his service that he drove a Jeep. He shared that one of his experiences as an Air Force MP was finding the culprit that stole some candy from the canteen.

SCHOOL IMPLEMENTING ONE-WAY STREET FOR STUDENT SAFETY

To ensure the safety of all our students during drop-off, we are going to implement a “one-way” street from 7:30 – 8:25 a.m. on school days. Please enter Pine Street from the North (Old Hwy 50 or 2nd Street). Drive South to the front of the school where your child can be dropped off by the main entrance. As you leave Pine Street on the south end, you can go straight, or turn east or west to leave the school. High school students will enter from the North and turn into the parking lot. If they have younger students with them, they will all walk from the parking lot.

Funeral services for John Melvin Nagel, 86, of Springfield, were held Saturday, August 10 at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Springfield. Burial was in the Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery with military honors. Inlieuof flowers,memorialswill be directed to the Springfield Senior Meals Program and the Emmanuel Reformed Church Scholarship Program. Peters Funeral Chapel of Springfield was in charge of arrangements.

SUMMER READING FINALE

About 80 people gathered in the Avon City Park on August 6th for the summer reading finale put on by the Avon Public Library. The afternoon started with 16 children meeting at the school to build 2-liter pop bottle rockets with Paul Kuhlman, assisted by Loretta Knodel, Rilyn Thury, and Hoyt Brandt. Next,theOutdoorCampusfromSiouxFallsputonan hour long presentation entitled, “Mammals of South Dakota.” Presenters had pelts on hand for about 20 mammals that live in our state ranging from small to large including mink, skunk, badger, raccoon, fox, wolf, and mountain lion. They discussed each animal’s diet, characteristics, and unique traits. Participantsthengotachancetoinvestigatethepelts and skulls. Next came the excitement of launching the rockets built earlier in the afternoon. Onlookers were surprised to see these simple rockets shoot up over the height of the trees in the park. The rocket that went the highest was named SAM and was built by Zane Rush and Cameron Ramirez. Prizes were presented for finishing Summer Reading Scavenger Hunts and to adults in appreciation of their support for the program. Everyone enjoyed supper served by library board members. The night was wrapped up by everyone having a chance to visit 3 activity/craft stations and making S’Mores.
