Last week Terran Talsma was awarded SD Player of the Week by the South Dakota Army National Guards for his exceptional leadership, teamwoork, inspiration and discipline on and off the field. The certificate added, Terran showed great leadership and led by example in the September 15th home gameagainstHitchcock-tulare,motivatingothersto do the same. Avon Pirates Football, Charlie Battery and the South Dakota Army National Guard are all proud to present this award to Terran Talsma. The results for homecoming week are in! For the dress-up days: the juniors got first place, the freshmen came in second place, and the seniors got third. Each class created a posterthe posters were a creation brought together in the big gym, and the winners were: seniors in first with a Spider-man theme, 8th grade in second place with Wakanda, and in 3rd place were the juniors with a Marvel theme. The winners of theskitswerethesophomoreswithBatmanandJoker,second place was 7th grade with Wonder Woman, and juniors with 3rd place representing Thor. For the floats, 1st place was the juniors with their slogan: “The Pirates will swing into a victory!” Also in 1st place for elementary, was the kindergarten class with their slogan: “Holy Smokes Batman! The Pirates will capture another victory.” In 2nd place in high school was the Freshman class with their slogan 'Riddle me this Batman: Who is going to win homecoming?” In 2nd place was 1st grade with their slogan: “It’s a bird! It's a plane! It’s the Super Pirates!” In 3rd place was 7th grade with their slogan: “The Pirates will fight with justice to beat the Patriots!” Also in third place was the preschool class with their slogan: “Mama Mia! The Pirates are going to win (Mario).”
Read moreWith homecoming, comes sports. Specifically, the homecoming football game. The Avon Pirates won against Hitchcock-Tulare 32-28. As for volleyball,theywentupagainst two teams homecoming week. On the 12th, they had a home game against Wagner and unfortunately lost 11:2. However, on the 14th at another home game, the Avon Lady Pirates won against Scotland 3:7. Finally, as for Cross Country, there were two men’s 5,000 meter runners, Tyler Tjeerdsma placing 4th and John Fathke placing 22nd. For the men’s 4,000 meter runners, Rance Kuhlman and Jack Fathke, Rance placed 1st and Jack placed3rd.Lastly,forthemen’s 3,000meterrunnerswereParker Podzimekwiththeplacingof 11th,PalmerPodzimekplacing 19th and Zane Rush.

The 2023 Homecoming Coronation was on September 11, 2023 in the main gym of Avon High School. The Coronation waskickedoffbyaperformancebytheAvonHighSchoolchoir. They performed the song “Everybody Talks,” and had a main attractionofdancingcouples.Then,itwastimetointroducethe candidates.Thecandidateswerecoupledupalphabetically.The candidates this year were Paxton Bierema and Jasmin Frank, MeganGretschmannandTerranTalsma,MaddyHuitemaand LandonThury,CourtneySeesandTylerTjeerdsma,andfinally Grace Vanderlei and Noah Watchorn. The ring bearers this year were Sawyer Bierema and Avery Beeson. As a result of the2023HomecomingCoronation,CourtneySeeswascrowned queen, and Noah Watchorn was crowned king. Ronnie Mount is being honored as the September Veteran of the Month. Ronnie was drafted on August 1, 1951, and served until June 1, 1953. He attended basic and quartermaster/food service school at Fort Chaffee, AR. MountwasachefintheArmy. At the time that Mount was drafted,hewaslivinginGary andwasarancher. TheArmy bussed Ronnie from Watertown to Fort Chaffee for his training.
