EDGAR GOEHRING

Edgar Goehring, age 96, of Sioux Falls was called to his heavenly home Thursday, May 23, 2019. He received loving care from staff of Avera Hospice and the Bethany Home in Sioux Falls following a brief illness.

Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1st at the First Congregational Church UCC in Sioux Falls. Committal service was at the Delmont City Cemetery.

Edgar Oscar Goehring was born February 5, 1923 in Douglas County near Delmont to Albert and Christine (Lindeman) Goehring. He was baptized and Confirmed at the Bethany Reformed Church in Delmont. Edgar graduated from Delmont High School in 1941. In 1942 he attended the fall quarter at South Dakota State until he returned to Delmont to help on the family farm.

He was an active 4-H club member and then a club leader for over 50 years. He was inducted into the South Dakota 4-H Leaders Hall of Fame in 2002. The State Fair was a special place for him and this is where he met his future wife Evelyn Engelhardt. After they married they both worked at the State Fair with the 4-H program.

Edgar married Evelyn Engelhardt of Bancroft on June 22, 1947. To this union four children were born and together they raised their family on the farm northeast of Delmont. Evelyn passed away December 23, 1992.

While 4-H took up much of his time he was also involved with the County and State Extension service, Douglas County Fair Board, served on the Belmont township board and was the township assessor for many years. He was involved in numerous community and church activities. As a member of Bethany Reformed Church he taught Sunday school and held many different positions in the church over the years. While farming was his life long occupation he also held the position of Douglas County Director of Equalization from 1975 until his retirement in 1988.

During his retirement years Edgar was involved with the M-2 Prison visitation program at the Springfield facility and the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. He was involved with the Gideon International for many years and supported many other worthwhile causes throughout his life.

On April 30, 1994 Edgar married Anetta (Mehlhaff) Hartman in Sioux Falls. They resided in Delmont until 2001 when they moved to Sioux Falls where they were active in many activities.

Since they lived close to the Active Generation Senior Center he became involved as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program until he moved to Edgewood Assisted Living in October 2017. He had recently been presented the “Service to Mankind Award” by the Sioux Falls Sertoma International.

He is survived by his wife Anetta, his four children: Jeanette (Kenneth) Fuchs, Lake Andes, Shirley Stach, Sioux Falls, Gaylord (Gail) Goehring, Mitchell, Merlin (Barb) Goehring, Sioux Falls, 8 grandchildren: John Fuchs, Phyllis (Tracy) Mach, Julie (Troy) VanDover, Glen (Meagan) Stach, David Stach, Amber (Jerimiah) Jans, Jill Hamilton and Amy (Chris) Juffer, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, one sister Alice Jurrens, Weatherford, OK, sister-in-law Bethel Goehring, Mitchell and 3 stepsons: Russell (Linda) Hartman, Douglas (Kathy) Hartman and Robert (Denise) Hartman, seven step grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents Albert and Christine Goehring, first wife Evelyn, brothers Erwin, Arthur, Alton and Norbert, son-in-law Paul Stach and great-grand daughter Annabelle Stach.

In Lieu of flowers it is requested that memorials be directed to the Gideon International Bible Fund or the South Dakota 4-H Foundation.
