On Saturday, February 22nd the Red Raider Wrestlers participated in the Region 3B wrestling tournament in Winner, SD. The top 4 finishers in each weight class earned the right to wrestle at the State B tournament in Sioux Falls on February 27-29th. The Raiders came into the day with ten wrestlers hoping to punch their ticket to get to the state tournament. The effort was there, but at the end of the day, six young men from Wagner earned that right to wrestle next weekend.

After a three year process, a local Main Street business has new owners. Joe and Kayla Cuka have recently purchased Wagner’s Fitness Building from previous owner John Foster. The couple plans on renaming/rebranding the business, calling it Iron Kingdom Wellness.

Wagner played a very good Platte-Geddes team on Friday night to close out their home games this season. Wagner had trouble scoring points all night and could not keep pace with the Black Panthers. Nolan Carda led the team with 9 points and he also grabbed 5 rebounds. Jayden Aungie hit two 3 pointers late in the game to finish with 6, Toby Zephier scored 3 and Jaden Peters 2.

The Red Raiders traveled to Burke on Thursday night to play the Burke Cougars. Wagner fell behind early but battled back in the second quarter to make the half time score 15-23. Wagner and Burke traded baskets most of the second half, the game remained fairly close but the Red Raiders could never take the lead and ended up falling 43-58. Dustin Honomichl scored 20 points for Wagner, Nolan Carda scored 8 points and had 11 rebounds. Toby Zephier added 5 points, Greg St. Pierre 4, Chris Nelson, Jaden Peters and Simon Freier all scored 2 points each.

The Red Raiders boys faced their toughest test of the year so far on Tuesday night hosting a very good Vermillion team. The boys hung with the Tanagers through the first quarter trailing 10-12 and kept the game within 10 points until half time trailing 15-25. Vermillion extended their lead throughout the second half and ended up winning the game 62-26. Simon Freier and Nolan Carda led he Red Raiders with 6 points each. Nolan Carda also grabbed 7 rebounds and Simon Freier had 3 steals. Toby Zephier added 5 points, Chris Nelson 4, Camden Roth 3 and Dustin Honomichl 2.

Wagner Hosted Platte-Geddes on Parents Night The Platte-Geddes Black Panthers traveled to town last Friday night to take on the Red Raiders in girls basketball action. Wagner would hold a slim lead after the first quarter 14-11. They would then out score the Panthers 41-12 the rest of the game to win 55-23. Macy Koupal would lead all scorers with 15 points, 11 boards, 5 assists, and 2 steals. Deisha Medicine Horn would add 12 points and 5 boards. Kayli Kocer would be the 3rd Red Raider in double figures with 10 points, 3 boards, and 3 steals. Eve Zephier would add 7 points, dish out 4 assists, and grab 3 boards. Jayla Bruguier would add 6 points off the bench and come away with 2 steals. Lizzie Tyler would add 3 points, grab 6 boards, and come away with 3 steals. Maesa Dvorak would round out the scoring with 2 points while also grabbing 4 rebounds. The Red Raiders were 19-52 for 37% while the Panthers were 8-43 for 19%. Wagner was 12-18 from the line while the Panthers were 5-13. Wagner owned the glass 37-28 and only turned the ball over 11 times compared to 19. “This was a good way to end our last home regular season game. We rebounded well, got out in transition and were able to hit open perimeter shots. To our seniors, Kayli, Maesa, Deisha, and Dani, thank you for your dedication and commitment not only to our team, but in the classroom and community. You truly are great role-models for our younger kids in school.”

The Red Raiders hosted Vermillion last Tuesday night in girls basketball action. Vermillion would start out on fire scoring 25 points in the first quarter to take a 25-16 lead. Wagner would keep it close until half trailing 26-32. Vermillion would have a :30 splurge where they would increase the lead from 7 to 16 points. Wagner would continue fight their way back and get it to 7 points with about 6 minutes left but just couldn’t climb the hill and eventually loose 64-54. Wagner would shoot 17-40 for 44% while Vermillion would go 22-48 for 46%. Wagner would convert 18-26 from the line while Vermillion would go 10-16. Wagner’s turnover would come at costly times as they would commit 23. Wagner would also force 20 turnovers. Deisha Medicine Horn would lead Wagner with 13 points and 3 boards. Macy Koupal would add 10 points, 5 boards and 2 assists. Lizzie Tyler would add 9 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Kayli Kocer would add 8 points, 4 boards, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Maesa Dvorak would add 5 points, 5 boards, and 3 steals. Abby Brunsing would also chip in 5 points. Eve Zephier would round out the scoring with 4 points. “It seems to be a common theme of fighting the uphill battle these past few games. The girls are showing a lot of fight. We hit the 50 point barrier finally for the first time in a long time. Our turnovers came at costly times in the second half when we had chances to chip away. We shot the ball well and forced 20 turnover.”
