Avon has a student of the month ceremony that has been going on for many years. For Avon Middle School, this award recognizes students who show academic effort, possess good character, overall good behavior, and treat everybody with kindness. The students who receive this award earn multiple perks: five Chamber bucks from Avon Community Bank; a gift certificate for a burger, fries, and pop from Tolsma’s Cove; Avon Pirate gear from Cahoy’s Service; and a yard sign from the Avon Booster Club.

The students who were recognized for September were (back) Kaylee DeJong, daughter of Travis and Amanda DeJong; and Haven Haenfler, daughter of Becky and Jeff Haenfler. For October, they were (front) Bode Podzimek, son of Kenny and Whitney Podzimek; and Cowan Wolf, son of Nick and Staci Wolf.

This year, because of no school due to state football, the Veterans Day Program was held on November 10. Students of Avon attended and the community was also invited to attend. This year the guest speaker was Mr. Justin Lukkes. Lukkes spoke about what Veterans Day means to him and what it is like to be a veteran. He also showed pictures from his deployments and explained them.

Read moreLocal vocalists recently attended the 69th Annual All State Choir and Orchestra Festival. After the football playoff game on October 28, Kley Heumiller, Sarah Swier, Kimberly Tolsma, and I made our way to Rapid City with choir director Autumn Schultz. We got to our hotel around 1:00 A.M. and had to be up, ready and singing by 7:45 A.M. Friday morning! We practiced most of the day with a few 30 minute breaks between sessions.
