Louis died Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Wagner. Funeral services were Saturday, January 29, at the Marty Community Center. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

STARR CHIEF EAGLE

Starr Chief Eagle is an enrolled member of the Sicangu (Rosebud) Lakota Sioux Tribe. She was born with the Lakota name Wichahpi Tokahe (First Star) and was later given the Lakota name Wichahpi Ohitika Winyan (Brave Star Woman) as she entered into adulthood. She grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota including Rapid City and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and started hoop dancing before she could walk. Since then she has been practicing every year to perfect her techniques and skills. Starr was raised up in hoop dancing by her father Dallas Chief Eagle and continues to carry on his teachings with a combination of her own.

I want folks of all age groups to enjoy my column, and I have no desire to become a “poster child” for the elderly. Still, on occasion, I have alluded to my age and the infirmities that go along with it – like needing a stepstool to climb on a horse, etc. Today, because of a recent experience, I’m going to deviate from avoiding an elderly point of view and talk about age limitations. We are an aging population.
