On Monday, I hosted my first Level Up Youth Conference in Rapid City. Over 350 students from more than a dozen West River schools attended to hear from a variety of speakers about how they can become more engaged citizens – and even learned some tips on how to better chat with Uncle Bob about politics during Thanksgiving dinner. Divisive political discourse, 24/7 news and media consumption, and low civic engagement among youth paint a bleak picture for our nation’s future, but it’s not too late to get us back on the right track. These students are our future leaders and there’s no doubt they will be part of the solution.

Etched into stone at the Korean War Memorial are the words, “Freedom is not free.” The generations of Americans who have made immense sacrifices in service to the United States know all too well what it costs to defend our country and secure our freedoms. They know what they sacrificed – their families do too – and they know others who made the ultimate sacrifice. They are all heroes, and on Veterans Day, we have a special opportunity to honor their service.

Lake Andes has a new City Finance Officer, Charlotte Pesicka, as of August 15th. Charlotte is a graduate of Andes Central School and was born and raised in Lake Andes. Previously, Charlotte had been working at the Andes State Bank for almost ten years and before that had worked for Buches doing bookkeeping for five years.

The move is on the way! As of November 2nd all items that need to be moved from the library location at 500 Main has been completed. Library employees and volunteers from the Lake Andes area are busy putting our moved inventory into the new library at 17 Park Ave.

The first meeting of the Country Quilters was held May 19, 1999. Over 24 years later, the group is still meeting and quilting together though some of the members have changed over the years. Charter members of the group were Janet Bortz, Noreen Bridges, Georgine Chytka, Lorraine Fox, Jennifer Hicks, Arlene Huber, Nancy Ireland, Carla Pesicka, Marietta Mabie, Anita Miller, Ardyth Nielson, Dawn Nolz, Sylvia Pelezza, Shelly Petrik, Joyce Soulek, JoAnn Steigmier, Ora Mae Wiechman, Ruby Wiechman and Helen Chernotek.
