AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

Each year the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors poem and essay contests for grades 3rd through 12th. This year’s Americanism essay contest title was “What does Freedom mean to me?” Students from Wagner Community School were asked to participate. There were seven essays received from the IV Class of freshmen and sophomores. Those participating in the essay contest were Emma Kreeger, Octavian Kocer, Trasin Dilts, Ravyn Medricky, Addison Cuka, Mara Wright and Kieradyn Knudsen. Winners were 1st place – Emma Kreeger, 2nd place – Ravyn Medricky and 3rd place – Trasin Dilts. Emma’s essay will be sent on to the state level to compete. The Wagner American Legion Auxiliary would like to thank all of the participants and the Wagner Community School for their support and help in facilitating the contest.

One of this week’s featured WCS senior’s is Madi Knebel. She is the daughter of Jason and Stacey Knebel. During her years at Wagner Community School, Madi has been a part of many school extra-curricular activities including band (three years), track (four years), volleyball (four years), stats (four years), activities council (two years), chorus (two years), National Honor Society (two years), swimming (three years), and Student Council (four years).

One of this week’s featured WCS seniors is Kya Kjeldgaard. She is the daughter of Tye and Kendra Kjeldgaard. Kya has been a part of many extra-curricular activities during her years at Wagner Community School including band (three years), track (four years), volleyball (four years), basketball (one year), the school play (two years), activities council (two years), National Honor Society (two years), swimming (four years) and student council (four years).

One of this week’s featured WCS Senior spotlights is Monroe (James) Kessler. Monroe is the son of Regan Gregor and Wendell Flying Hawk Jr. Monroe also goes by the nicknames of Jimmy and Hamez/Yamez. During his years at Wagner Community School, Monroe has been a part of several activities including JAG (one year) and the school play (one year).

Funeral Services for Joseph Kirwan, age 77, of Gregory, were held Saturday, March 9 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Gregory, with Father Jonathan Dillon as Celebrant.

CHARLES SCHMITH

Charles John “Chuck” “Papa” Schmith, 84 of Sioux City, Iowa passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024 at a local nursing facility. Funeral Services were held March 6 at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with Reverend Scott Squires officiating. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels. com Chuck was born May 10, 1939 in Hospers, Iowa to Arnold and Florence (Schwebach) Schmith. The family lived in Paullina, Iowa during his early childhood, moved to Sioux City in 1953, where Chuck graduated from East High School with the Class of 1959. He went on to continue his education, and received his degree from Morningside College in business administration.
