Wagner Community School is seeking nominations for the Wagner Community School Teacher of the Year Award. Those seeking to nominate an educator for the award are asked to complete the nomination form that can be found in The Wagner Announcer on March 9 or March 16, 2020 and send it to Wagner Community School, ATTN: Mr. Shad Storley, Superintendent, 101 Walnut Avenue SW, Wagner, SD 57380. Nomination forms may also be picked up in any of the Principal’s offices or the business office. The deadline is by noon on Friday, April 3, 2020. No forms will be taken after that.

The Red Raiders hosted the Madison Bulldogs last Monday night in girls basketball action. Madison would jump out to an early 8-1 lead. Wagner would surge back to tie the game at 12. Wagner would get out scored 31- 17 in the 2nd and 3rd quarter and fall short of any come back 43-56. Kayli Kocer had a great night for her final game as a Raider. She posted 18 points, 4 boards, 4 steals, and 2 assists. Macy Koupal was the other Raider in double figures with 10 points, 6 boards, and 3 steals. Maesa Dvorak added 7 points and grabbed a game high 12 boards while also getting 3 steals. Deisha Medicine Horn finished with 6 points and 6 boards. Eve Zephier finished with 2 points, 3 boards, and 4 steals. Lizzie Tyler dished out a team high 4 assists. Wagner was 16-52 from the floor for 31% while Madison was 23-53 for 43%. Wagner committed 12 turnovers compared to 18 from Madison. Wagner was out rebounded 33-32. “Not the way we wanted to end. The girls never quit. They kept playing hard this game and throughout the year. Shooting was our struggle tonight as we got good looks but just didn’t convert at a high percentage. We want to thank our Seniors for all their work, leadership, and dedication: Dani, Kayli, Deisha, and Maesa. We wish them the best of luck in the future and you will be missed. Thank you to all the parents for allowing us to have your daughters for the past 4 months. Unfortunately, this season is over finishing 8-13 at the varsity level where we competed in most of our losses. Our schedule is tough as we play top teams in both class A and B where 5-6 if not more of our opponents will make the state tournament. Our JV finished 14-6 on the year. With that being said, our schedule won’t change, and we will have competitive teams. We made improvements throughout the season, but to get where these competitive teams are, we must start in the off-season by playing in the driveway, getting to open gyms, and just watching basketball. Our lives are busy, but so is everyone’s. You are only going to get something positive by what you put into it.”

The Boys & Girls Club of the Missouri River Area, Wagner Unit recently finished their 3rd and 4th grade basketball season. We had 20 girls participate, with volunteer coaches Tana Langdeau, Laura Wright and Stacy Holzbauer. We had 18 boys participate, with volunteer coaches Derrick Marks and Zyan Zephier. They participated in a few local games and played in the Avon Jamboree playing teams from Avon, Marty and Bon Homme. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication this season. We appreciate all the volunteer coaches and parents for helping to make this program a success.

Read moreThe 95th session of the South Dakota Legislature is nearly over with 4 days left this next week and veto day which is the 30th of March. The final week will be very busy, as this week was, while we get through all the remaining Senate bills. The budgets for FY 20 and FY 21 are nearing completion and by the closeout of session, with negotiations between House, Senate and the Governor’s office, we will leave Pierre with a balanced budget.
