Randall Powers is the son of Dennis and April Powers. He wrestled intheheavyweight class and is currently a sophomore at Avon High School. Randall is relatively new to the wrestling scene and has only been wrestling for two years. Powersdecidedtostart wrestling after being encouraged by wrestling parents and other wrestlers. During Randall’s wrestling career, he has had a lot of help and inspiration from Travis Tjeerdsma, the father of one of his teammates,Travis,andBradBierema, Powers’ football coach.

Wagner Community School qualified eight wrestlers to the AAU State Wrestling Tournament that was held March 15th -17th in Rapid City at The Monument. Out of the eight qualifying wrestlers, five of the wrestlers brought home medals. The eight wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament were Klay Kokesh (tots 57), Jacob Holzbauer (Bantam 57), Lane Koupal (Midgets 63), Rachel Holzbauer (girls Midgets 77), John Krcil (Novice 64), Tom Krcil (Novice 63), Mason Turner (Novice 117), and Frank Krcil (Schoolboy 90). A big thank you to the dedicated coaches who volunteered their time to teach the WCS youth wrestlers this season. These coaches were Alex Kocer and Austin Genzlinger. Before the wrestlers left for the AAU State Tournament in Rapid City, WCS had the wrestlers do a walk through the hallways so that the staff and students could wish them all good luck. The five wrestlers that placed were Klay Kokesh, state champion; Frank Krcil, 2nd place; Tom Krcil, 3rd place; Rachel Holzbauer, 5th place; and John Krcil, 6th place. Klay Kokesh came home with a state championship title in the Tot’s 57 lb weight class.

Tyler Tjeerdsma is the son of Amber Babutzke and Travis and Hillary Tjeerdsma. He wrestled in the 138-pound weight class and is a senior at Avon High School. Tyler has been wrestling for 11 years.Hisdad,Travis,was the first one to introduce Tyler to wrestling and hasdefinitelyinspiredand helped Tyler throughout his wrestling career. Being a part of a wrestlinglegacy,hasmadeTylerpush himself to do better and achieve more than anyone else who has wrestled in his family has.

The Avon archery team recently attended the 2024 State Nation Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Tournament held in Spearfish at Black Hills State University on Friday, March 22nd. It was a one-day tournament where everyone from the Avon team qualified to compete at the state level. The competition is top level with schools from all over South Dakota coming to compete for awards,titlesandhopingtomake it to the nationals competition.

The Lady Raiders outright won the LMVC Conference for the third consecutive year going undefeated 5-0 and placing 4 players on the All-Conference Team upon voting by conference coaches. Macy Koupal and Lydia Yost are 3-time LMVC all-conference players. Ashlyn Koupal would also return as a 2-time LMVC all-conference player while Braxton Nedved would make her first appearance.

The Wanger boys basketball team lost to Bon Homme on Tuesday night in region play. The Raiders trailed 12-13 after the first period. Wagner outscored Bon Homme in the second period and led 26-22 at half time. Bon Homme outscored Wagner in both quarters of the second half and won the game on a buzzer beater 3 pointer 48-45. Joey Cournoyer Jr. had a game high 22 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Carter Cournoyer had 9 points and had 11 rebounds. Parker Petry scored 8 points and Brady Cournoyer added 6 points. Wagner won the rebounding battle 41-22, the difference in the game was points off turnovers, Bon Homme scored 17 points off of Wagner’s 12 turnovers while the Red Raiders scored 4 points off of Bon Homme’s 5 turnovers. The Wagner boys team finished the season with a 12-9 record.
