The Wagner 7th and 8th grade boys basketball teams were in action on Saturday, January 21, competing in the Wagner Basketball Boosters Tournament. Stats for the 7th grade games were not kept. They opened the tournament with Kimball-White Lake and cruised to a 45-15 victory. The semifinal game, the Raiders were matched up with Mt Vernon/Plankinton. The Raiders again won the game by double digits and advanced to the championship game against a team from Yankton. After falling behind early in the first half the Raiders made a run to take a lead at halftime. Yankton came out in the second half and regained the lead and pushed it up to 7 points. A furious late rally by the Raiders including a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Steven Peters tied the game at the end of regulation to force overtime. In a back-and-forth battle in overtime, the Raiders had a shot again with a last second heave from halfcourt, but it missed, and the Raiders were defeated in overtime by a score of 34-33. The 7th graders record is now at 3-2 on the season.

In the 8th grade game, the Raiders jumped out to an 8-4 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 15-8 at the half. We came out and pressured the Tornadoes in the 3rd quarter and created quite a few turnovers that lead to points for the Raiders. The highlight of the quarter was Jesse Zephier hitting a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to push the Raiders lead to 17. We got a lot of different guys playing time and experience in the 4th quarter as the Raiders pulled out the victory with a score of 28-15. The win improved their record to 2-0 on the season. Leading scorers were: Javian Pesicka with 10, Jesse Zephier with 8, Carlos Galindo with 5, Leon Fields with 3 and Benny Greger chipped in 2.
Read moreWagner hosted the Burke Cougars for a pair of games on Tuesday, January 17. In the 8th grade game, the Raiders got off to a fast start as they built an 11-0 lead after the first quarter. Burke settled down in the second quarter as the Raiders maintained a 15-6 lead at the half. Both teams traded baskets in the third quarter to keep the margin at 9 going into the fourth. The Raiders stretched the lead back to double digits and wound up winning the game 29-17 improving their record to 3-0 on the season. Leading scorers were Dominic Doom with 8, Leon Fields, Carlos Galindo, Benny Greger, and Trasin Dilts all added 4, Avery Medicine Bear had 3 and Winston Little Moon added 2 to round out the scoring.

After one practice, the 8th grade team travelled to Avon for a game against the Pirates. The lack of practice was evident as points were hard to come by in the first quarter, but the Raiders were able to build a 6-0 lead. The team started playing more together in the 2nd and 3rd quarters as they expanded their lead to 11 at half and then to 25 by the end of the third. As the final buzzer sounded, the Raiders pulled out a 35-14 victory for their first win of the season. Leading the way in scoring for Wagner was Dominic Doom with 18, Carlos Galindo 6, AJ Kotab with 3, and Leon Fields, Javian Pesicka, Trasin Dilts and Benny Greger all added 2. Both the 7th and 8th grade teams travel to Centerville for their next game action. Team members for the 2023 season include 7th graders: Brannon Bruguier, Brock Cournoyer, Kayo Fischer, Michael Johnson, Jacob Kotab, Michael Koupal, Isaiah Marshall, Steven Peters, Payne Petry, Zaiden Ross, and Gavin Tjeerdsma. 8th graders include: Kingston Brunelle, Trasin Dilts, Dominic Doom, Leon Fields, Carlos Galindo, Benny Greger, AJ Kotab, Paxton Kuhlman, Winston Little Moon, Avery Medicine Bear, Beau Otte, Javian Pesicka, Jace Scott, and Jesse Zephier.
