The event was open to the public and included special dances and contests, invited singers, prizes and vendors. The special dances and contests included female and male side step, kahomni, potato dance and the hand drum contest. Invited singers included Donavyn Williamson, Hehaka Akichita Elk Soldier, Mato Thomas and Jermaine Bell. Prizes were awarded for best moccasins, best ribbon skirt and shirt and best braids. The master of ceremony for the event was Gerald Zephier and stickman was Darrell Zephier. The event was held at the WCS auxiliary gym. Cultural Coordinator, Jimmy Sanchez was the organizer of the kahomni. Traditionally a kahomni dance was a dance that consisted of two people that two stepped to songs specifically made for the dance. It was a dance that was traditionally a way for young men to show respect to young women whom they were publicly courting with little contact. In recent years, the kahomni has been used as more of a social dance and gathering. They had a great turn out of participants and it was a fun evening had by all. Read moreA building that has been a part of the Wagner main street since at least 1935, began demolition Friday, December 8th. The old meat locker was completely torn down and debris was removed that day and over the weekend. Current owners, Joey and Brenda Jaton, needed to safely bring down the building before the roof completely caved in. Last winter was particularly hard on the building’s roof and had started the cave-in. They currently have no plans for the lot, but would love to see it hold a new business or to see someone interested in using the space to enhance Wagner.
