The Charles Mix Foster Closet was first organized in November of 2024 by Jessica Nielsen. Jessica ,a former employee by the Department of Social Services (DSS), knew that there was a need in Charles-Mix County and that many foster families/children would greatly benefit from this type of organization. She was inspired to start a foster closet in Charles-Mix County after hearing about the Restore Foster Closet based out of Yankton. Jessica saw how much it made a difference to the foster children and families in the Yankton area.

Homesteading originated from the Homestead Act of 1862, when the government enticed people to move west by giving them the right to claim 162 acres of land. Homesteading once again became mainstream in the 1990s asthegogreenmovementgained momentum interweaving with homesteading to create a new type of homesteading with a goal of self-sufficiency, resourcefulness and eating less processed foods. Who would have thought that homesteading would once again be a lifestyle trend. In our area, nestled six miles directly north of the Avon City limits on 406th Avenue is one version of a modern homestead, Tiny Acres Homestead.

Read moreKarlie Marie DeVries was bornonSeptember13th,2006to Jenelle Pekas and Aaron Pinkleman. She has a stepfather, Aaron Pekas, and two siblings, Austin and Kensley. In Karlie's free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, watching movies, and reading. Karlie’s favorite subject in school is anatomy because she enjoys learningaboutthehumanbody. A quote she lives by is, “You can’t fly unless you let yourself fall” - Justin Bieber. When asked who her biggest role model is, she said, “My mom is my biggest role model; she is the one constant in my life.” Her advice to the underclassman is to not procrastinate, and take it in because it goes by faster than you think. One of Karlie’s accomplishments at AHS is being named best pitcher in softball sophomore year. Karlie plans on attending Mitchell Tech in the Medical Office Professional Program. Her favorite memory from her time at AHS was cheering at the dome. The thing Karlie is going to miss most about AHS is her class because they have grown together so much over the last 12 years.
